The 2024 Lysaght Inspirations Design Awards have recognised Justin Katsumata Yu as this year’s Student Design winner for his exceptional project, Wooditch Tea House. A Master of Architecture graduate of the University of Western Australia, Justin brings a personal touch to his design, drawing inspiration from his grandmother’s artistic influence.

Currently based in Melbourne, Justin’s creative work spans multiple disciplines, including architecture, furniture, product, and interior design. With a deep respect for traditional craftsmanship and innovative processes, his designs are centred on functional, accessible living spaces.

Wooditch Tea House is a serene private residence located in Margaret River, Western Australia, offering a retreat for solitude and reflection. The project takes inspiration from traditional Japanese shrines and teahouses, incorporating minimalist forms and elements such as a gable roof with overhang made from LYSAGHT CUSTOM ORB®, reflecting durability and harmony with the natural environment.

The design sits perched within treetops, constructed across 12 micro piles to gently emerge from the sloping hillside, in tune with the landscape. Sliding wooden panels enclose the spaces, connected by an engawa (a traditional covered walkway), encouraging seamless indoor and outdoor living. With its thoughtful use of local materials and subtle nod to Japanese aesthetics, Wooditch Tea House is not only a space for reflection but also expresses a uniquely Australian identity.

In addition to winning this year’s Student Award, Justin’s project reflects his commitment to sustainable design and thoughtful craftsmanship, reinforcing the importance of innovation in architecture. This award is a fitting recognition of his creative talent, setting a promising path for his future work in design.
